About This Programme
The Master of Science in Finance and Investment equips students with advanced knowledge and practical skills in financial decision-making from a management perspective. Combining a strong academic foundation with real-world applications, this programme prepares graduates for diverse roles, including hedge fund specialist, security analyst, portfolio manager, broker, and risk manager. The Master of Science in Finance and Investment offers a comprehensive curriculum that combines advanced theoretical knowledge with practical application. Core modules such as Principles of Finance, Investment Management, and Financial Analysis and Valuation provide a strong foundation in financial concepts and techniques. Advanced modules, including International Business Finance and Financial Engineering and Machine Learning, equip students with specialised skills to navigate complex global financial landscapes and technological advancements.
Graduates will refine their research abilities through the Research Methods and Research Project modules, gaining experience in formulating and addressing critical finance questions. With a focus on real-world applications, the programme prepares students for dynamic roles in financial analysis, investment management, and corporate finance across various industries.
Foundations of Scholarship (Dept ACC)
This module equips students with the essential skills needed for postgraduate studies in finance. Students will develop advanced abilities in listening, note-taking, reading, and writing, tailored for academic and professional contexts.
The module introduces key elements of university and academic journal writing, fostering critical thinking and rational argumentation. Students will apply these skills in planning, presenting, and structuring written and oral data effectively.
In addition, the module covers basic statistical concepts and trains students in statistical analysis using SPSS. Topics include descriptive statistics, graphs, random variables, measures of central tendency and variation, bivariate correlation, and simple linear regression. Students will also explore issues such as extreme values, omitted variables, and tests of normality in distribution.
Financial Engineering and Machine Learning
This module introduces students to the essentials of financial mathematics, alongside the development of financial engineering tools and machine learning methods. Students will build a strong foundation in probability theory, financial econometrics, and analytical skills, equipping them for advanced MSc programmes and data analyst roles in the financial sector.
Principles of Finance
This foundational module provides students with an in-depth understanding of the role of finance in business and the essential tools and techniques for effective financial management. Key topics include financial instruments, investment appraisal, risk management methods, capital structure, and dividend policy, studied within the contexts of corporate governance and business ethics.
Students will explore long-term financial strategies, valuation principles, bond pricing, cost of capital, capital asset pricing, and financial risk management. The module also introduces basic company valuation and decision-making processes, offering a foundation for advanced study in finance within MSc programmes. It equips students with the theoretical and practical skills to apply finance principles in any management decision-making process across diverse business sectors.
Investment Management
This module equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to construct, manage, and evaluate portfolios for individual and institutional investors. It addresses critical investment decisions, including liability management, risk assessment, and asset allocation strategies for bonds, equities, and structured products. The use of derivatives for risk management is also explored.
Key topics include portfolio optimisation, asset pricing models, and performance evaluation methods such as benchmarking, attribution analysis, and risk-adjusted returns. Students will delve into investment strategies, including value and growth investing, momentum trading, liability-driven investments, and fixed income strategies. The module also examines non-traditional investment funds, such as socially responsible investment funds, exchange-traded funds, and Islamic funds, exploring their origins, composition, and strategies. Ethical and professional conduct in investment practices is emphasised throughout.
International Business Finance
This module provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the roles, functions, and activities of financial institutions and markets in financing and risk management. Students will explore the principles and techniques for measuring and managing financial risks, including credit, market, interest rate, and liquidity risks.
The first half of the module examines the impact of monetary and fiscal policies, business cycles, and market organization.
The second half focuses on credit and equity derivative products, with an emphasis on corporate derivatives. Key topics include the mechanics, pricing, and modeling of products such as Credit Default Swaps (CDS), indices and options, equity dividend swaps, equity correlation trading, credit securitization, and collateralized debt obligations (CDOs). This module equips students with practical tools for navigating complex international finance scenarios.
Financial Analysis and Valuation
This module equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform in-depth fundamental analyses of company performance, enabling informed appraisals of future prospects and underlying value. Students will develop an understanding of the critical role financial reports play in investment decision-making.
The module explores the integration of publicly available financial statements with theoretical principles underpinning valuation models to assess and explain equity values. Students will also examine the factors driving share prices, contrasting them with fundamental valuations, and gain insights into the dynamics of financial performance and market behaviour.
Research Methods
This module guides students in developing a suitable research question within accounting, banking, finance, or financial management, providing a foundation for their MSc dissertation. It covers the academic and methodological requirements for finance-based research, offering practical insights into research design, data collection, and data analysis.
Students will refine their topics into research proposals with supervisor support, gaining an understanding of commonly used quantitative and qualitative research methods. The module also develops advanced intellectual skills, including evaluation, analysis, synthesis, critical thinking, and project management, essential for conducting small-scale research projects effectively.
Research Project
This module focuses on examining and reporting on a specific finance research question, either pre-set or proposed by students based on their experience or interests. Students will produce a research project of approximately 8,000 to 9,000 words, excluding appendices.
Building on the practical skills and research techniques established in the Research Methods and Financial Econometrics modules, students will apply their knowledge to conduct in-depth analysis and present their findings effectively, demonstrating their mastery of finance and investment concepts.

Who can apply for this course
Minimum Academic Entry Requirement
Students who have successfully completed either of the following:
- Bachelor’s degree from a recognised University with minimum 2 classifications
- Students who have obtained equivalent qualifications in relevant fields (usually professional qualification), will be assessed case-by-case and subjected to university approval
- Two years of work experience in managerial/professional capacity is mandatory
Minimum English Language Entry Requirement
Applicants who have not studied prior qualifications in English require IELTS 6.0 or equivalent in an accepted English language test.
